Mountain Chalet in Serene Lakes / North Lake Tahoe

Non-simultaneous exchanges welcome.

Our home is a 1970 split-level mountain chalet with vintage details and period furniture -- the perfect cabin retreat. The main level features a large great room with panoramic windows and open floorplan to the kitchen. Downstairs are 3 bedrooms (2 queen size beds and 1 king size bed) plus laundry area, and the upper loft contains 1 bunkbed (2 twin size beds). There are 2 bathrooms.

The cabin has a Jøtul wood burning stove and heat/air conditioning. There is an outdoor BBQ, propane fire pit, hammock and lots of gear that you can use (snowshoes, kayaks, games, etc). The lower level has a summer door to the garden area.

The home is located in Serene Lakes, a community at Donner Summit / North Lake Tahoe. Winter activities include downhill and cross county skiing, snowshoeing, and winter hikes. During the summer many community events happen around our small private lakes. The town of Truckee and other activities at Lake Tahoe are a 15-30 minute drive.

Access is by vehicle (4 wheel drive or all wheel drive + chains in winter). We have a 4x4 Jeep at the property that can be used upon request. Electric vehicle charging. Street parking allowed in summer; in winter there are spaces for two vehicles.

Our Neighbourhood

Nearest Airport: Reno -

Serene Lakes is a mountain resort community surrounding spring-fed lakes high in the Sierra Nevada mountains. It is commonly known as the “Sierra’s best kept secret” because of it’s natural resources and unique extremely quiet location. At an elevation of 7,000 feet it is one of the snowiest neighborhoods in the United States, but it also sees about 300 days of sunshine. The neighborhood is quiet and very peaceful throughout the year, with the busiest time being summer months.

Winter:

As part of the North Tahoe area there is easy access to nearby downhill and nordic skiing. Royal Gorge Resort and Soda Springs Resort are less than 5 minutes away. Sugar Bowl is 10 minutes away. The Olympic Valley resorts are 20-30 minutes away. The lakes freeze over and provide opportunities for skating and hockey. Or, sit by the fire inside and watch the snow fall. Note: During winter months a 4-wheel drive vehicle or standard vehicle with chains is required. The roads and driveway are plowed but during winter storms the highway could be closed for a period of time.

Summer:

During the summer there are many community events on holiday weekends. Activities on the lakes include swimming, sailing, and kayaking. For experienced sailers we have a 1970 Koralle Jr sailboat available to use (requires assembly). There is a small sand beach for sunbathing and swimming. Mountain biking is a popular activity along with hiking on neighborhood trails. Rock climbing and river rafting excursions are available in Truckee. Nearby resorts and towns host festivals and concerts throughout summer months.

Further Afield:

Soda Springs only offers basic services (one general store and one gas station). Truckee is a 20-minutes drive away and has all the conveniences of a small resort town (grocery stores, restaurants, etc). Reno is the nearest city (60-minute drive) with scheduled air service and major shopping. Sacramento is a 90-minute drive away.
