Flat in Reykajvík, Iceland

We have now made exchange agreement for July 2012 with a Family in Berlin - We are not planning other vacation time this year

We live in a three apartment house with a big garden in the center of Reykjavik. We have an apartment on the 2nd floor. It is 90m2 with four bedrooms, 1 bathroom, living room and a kitchen-dining room with a small balcony. We have recently had our apartment renovated, except for the bathroom. In the basement there is a common washing room where we have our washing machine /drier but we are the only family who use this room. In the basement we also have a storage room and a teenage-hangout-living room where our eldest son might be staying while we are travelling.
We have a five persons Citroen Picasso (2006), which is quite comfortable for children, but not good for rough roads.

There is a five minute walk to the city center of Reykjavik, the main shopping street is, restaurants, coffee shops. The Reykjavik Music Hall, the National and Reykjavik Art Museum are only 10 minutes away.  The National Museum is 15 minutes walk (5 minutes drive). The nearest shopping center is 5 minutes drive.
The old Swimming Hall of Reykjavik is 5 minutes away and other quite nice swimming pools are only a short drive away. There is a 5 minutes drive to the popular Nautholsvik sandy beach in Reykjavik which is heated by hot water flowing into the bay, so you can actually enjoy bathing in the summer (There is a bowling alley close by). It is possible to go whale watching from the Reykjavik harbor (15 minutes walk).
The Blue Lagoon is 40 minutes drive from Reykjavik and within 1-3 hours drive one can go to Thingvellir National Park, Geysir, Gullfoss, Kerid, Hraunfossar, Eyjafjallajokull, Hekla, and Skogafoss.

Things to do in Iceland.

Most people visit Iceland to observe nature. In this respect Iceland is a very varied country and one observe, beautiful lakes, mountains, glaciers, sands, waterfalls, and geysers close to Reykjavik. There are also organized (and somewhat costly) bus and jeep tours into the highlands, and snow scooter tours on the glaciers.  However there are also many interesting things to do in Reykjavik.
Some possible activities near or not far from Reykjavik are pony-riding-tours, snow scooter tours (on the glaciers), river rafting and guided bus tours. If you are traveling with children we can recommend the Icelandic swimming pools. These are often excellent and very interesting for children. Opening ours are often long and the outdoor swimming pool use geothermal water and can therefore for whole year.  There are numerous swimming pools in and around Reykjavik. There are also nice pools in many small towns and at some surprising locations in the countryside.
Travel tip for Iceland: Do like Icelander do, follow the weather forecast closely and plan your travels accordingly. The weather in Iceland can change depending on location and therefore it can be very good to plan according to weather.
