Comfortable house in Petaluma, USA

Please note: We have travel arrangements set through fall of 2014, but we are always interested in discussing possible exchanges for later in 2014 or into 2015.

Petaluma is a charming small town in the Sonoma County wine region, 50 kilometers north of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco. Downtown Petaluma is within walking distance of our home.  The town has a good selection of shops, excellent restaurants, and parks as well as a farmers' market on Saturdays.

Sunset Magazine often features Petaluma as an ideal California town; several films have been made in Petaluma, including American Grafitti, Peggy Sue Got Married, and Lolita.

Our home is in the historic center of Petaluma.   The garden, filled with roses, geraniums, and salvias, is a lovely place in the afternoon or evening to drink a glass of local wine and share a meal comprised of local ingredients.

The National Geographic Traveler magazine highlighted Sonoma County as one of the top travel destinations in the world for 2012.  The magazine also featured Petaluma for its food and recreational opportunities:  http://adventure.nationalgeographic.com/adventure/trips/adventure-towns/petaluma-california/

In addition to hosting fine wineries, Sonoma County is home to artisanal food producers and farms.  Recently, Bon Appetit magazine ranked Della Fattoria, a bakery/restaurant in Petaluma, as one of the 10-best bakeries in the United States.

San Francisco is a short journey to the south by freeway or with public transit (Golden Gate Transit bus). You can also drive a few kilometers south to the town of Larkspur in Marin County and take a Golden Gate ferry to San Francisco's farmers' market and San Francisco Giants' baseball stadium.

The San Francisco Bay Area offers a wonderful variety of cultural attractions including music, theatre, dance, opera, and art.  Additionally,  the San Francisco Bay Area is home to several well-known schools, including the University of California at Berkeley and Stanford University.

The scenic Point Reyes National Seashore park and the Pacific Ocean are 20 miles (30 kilometres) to the west.  The park features hiking trails, picnicking locations, excellent birding, and rugged beaches.

Napa Valley's wine region, 30 miles (50 kilometres) to the east, is noted for its restaurants, culture, and wineries.

A recent note: In January, The New York Times highlighted the North Coast of California and Lake Tahoe--both easily accessible from Petaluma--in the newspaper's listing of 52 places to travel in 2014.

Petaluma is the ideal spot for a Northern California visit.
