More details about Souvigny: Souvigny: Daughter of Cluny , birthplace of the Bourbon Dynasty.
The monastic story of Souvigny begins in 916 when Aymard , the first known ancestor of the Bourbon family , gave the land of Souvigny to Cluny . This donation permitted the installation of a priori attached to Cluny in the Bourbonnais . On March 11th 994, an important event took place . Saint Mayeul , the fourth abbot of Cluny , died while visiting Souvigny ,Mayeul was buried in the church St Peter , an earlier version of the current building which was mentioned in the donation document of Aymard. Souvigny rapidely became an important pilgrimage destination and many miracles were reported. In 1049, Mayeul's successor as abbot of Cluny , Odilon, also died at Souvigny . H e was buried in the same sarcophagus as Mayeul, at the center of the have of the church . From that time forward the church was organized spatially to welcome the ever-increasing flow of pilgrims. Little is known about the early state of the church St Peter , Odilon may have nuilt a simple chuch with a single nave, which was soon therafter rebuilt with side-aisles.
In the twelfth and thirteenth centuries , the church was further expanded to accomodate pilgrims: two additional side-aisles were added in the nave, and the choir was pushed further east and fitted with five radiating chapels. In the fifteen century , Dom Chollet , prior of Souvigny from 1424 to 1454, began some essential repaire to the structure, which had fallen into a state of considérable decay. The nage and choir were built above the level of main arcades , as well as the cloister were reworked . Souvigny was the largest church in Bourbonnais. The monastery was active until the French revolution .Only the monastic buildings have been re- habilited, in 1990 monks of the Community of Saint John restored Souvigny to its original vocation.
