June 15, 2020 - August 15, 2020 1 weeks

We are not looking for an exchange for 2019, however, we are starting to plan for a longer visit on the West Coast, USA for the summer of 2020. We will start off with friends in Central California, and then move around a bit. Hence interested in a home swop in the end of June or first half of July somewhere in California, or Oregon (or why not, Baja California). Non-simultaneous exchanges are possible, for instance our home could be available for you in the summer or christmas holiday of 2019 or 2020 (other times of the year if it coincides with school holidays).

3 bedroom apartment in downtown Stockholm, close to water, large park, subway

Our home is a modern apartment built in the early 1990s. It’s on the top (7th) floor, which makes for a beautiful view over classic Stockholm rooftops in two directions. (An elevator takes you up.)

Kungsholmen island is part of the city center. You will find water no more than a few minutes away in several directions, and one of the largest parks in the city - right on the waterfront - is a couple blocks to the south from here. Everything you need for everyday life is within a tight radius, including supermarkets, postal service, state liqour/wine/beer store, etc.

Fridhemsplan is a major public transportation hub, where two out of three major subway lines and a great many buses stop (including the airport shuttle bus service from Arlanda and Bromma airports).

We have two children, seven and nine years old, so families with kids are likely to feel right at home. In addition to the master bedroom and the kids’ room, there is a study/extra room with a permanent bed.

The courtyard is an old school yard, fairly lush in the summer with a baroque fountain. You can use the permanent barbeque set and free-for-all lawn furniture for your dinner. It is one of the largest courtyards in downtown Stockholm, where inner yards tend to be cramped.

There is of course free Wifi for you in the apartment (1 gigabit/second downloads and no monthly data ceiling, so you and the kids can watch separate Netflix streams if you like).

Fully equipped kitchen - we love to cook and we believe you will find everything you need here. The two bathrooms, not a common feature in central Stockholm, will make the stay easier for families.

As for air conditioning, very few homes in Sweden have A/C as it’s completely unnecessary for all but a few days every year. Don’t worry - with windows in two directions, just crack them open and you will have enough of a cross draught to stay comfortable.

We have a car, but it’s a leasing contract and we are in the process of finding out if we are allowed to let others use it without violating the terms or insurance policy. If we get a green light from the leasing agency, you will be free to use it. We have a private parking spot in a garage below the house, with direct access from the elevator. (If you have a rental car, you can use the parking spot, which is a great benefit because of the difficulties finding street parking in Kungsholmen.)

We use our bikes all the time, sturdy non-sporty models with kiddy seats on the back so we can take our children. We'll leave the keys and you are more than welcome to use them. Also, public transportation in Stockholm is superb.

About Our Family

Our family consists of Anders, Lott, and our two children, Juno (9 years) and Kasper (7). Anders is a public relations consultant and former journalist. Lott works at the Folke Bernadotte Academy, the Swedish government agency for peace, security and development.

We enjoy food and wine, meeting friends and spending as much time as possible with the kids. We like to go for small outings in the woods near Stockholm, foraging for mushrooms and berries or just trekking. When we don't spend the free time with the family, Anders does a lot of wine tasting - sometimes moonlighting as a wine writer - and Lott is into ceramics, as you will find ample proof of around the apartment.

We have done quite a lot of traveling, although there's been a bit less of that the last few years when the kids have been really small. We really want to get back on the road again.

Anders was a high school foreign exchange student in rural California in the early nineties. We still have regular contact with the host family, truly wonderful people whom we have continued to visit and have received several times in Sweden. In 2001, Anders returned to spend a semester at San Francisco State University, renting a room on the fringes of the Castro district.

Lott was born in Helsinki, Finland, and moved to Stockholm with her family at age 10. She studied Arabic as part of her Political Science major at Uppsala university and has lived and worked in Cairo, Egypt for two half-year stretches, as well as several other parts of the Middle East.

We have done a couple of home exchanges and are deeply in love with the idea. We are used to finding lodging with friends and taking care of other people's homes when we travel, and formal exchange is just an extension of that. This short step closer to everyday life at a travel destination does so much more for the intercultural experience than a hotel or hostel ever could. We hope that you can feel at ease, trusting that we will treat your home with the utmost respect. Our experience of the couch surfing community has also been great.
