Two cottages in quiet village, 2 hours from Amsterdam, close to the Frisian Islands

Hello everyone, we are Laura (40) and Marko (40), Tamar (11) and Rosalie (9). We live in a 19th-century cottage in Warfhuizen, a little village of about 260 inhabitants in the municipality of De Marne, which lies in the north-western part of the province of Groningen, adjoining the Wadden Sea.

For summer 2015 we have already arranged an exchange.

Information about the house
We live in two cottages next to each other. Our home is situated on a ‘wierde’ (which is a man-made mound) in a small street that ends in a cul-de-sac, so there is little to no traffic. The neighbourhood is very quiet and pleasant. The house is surrounded by a nice garden, full of flowers and with a big maple tree and ash that make it a lush little paradise in the summer. The garden looks out on a meadow with sheep. A few years ago we renovated our barn to a fully equipped extra home, where we have a bedroom for two, a bathroom, a living room with wood-burning stove and a little kitchen. So now we have not one, but two cottages, which is ideal for friends or family who want to stay over.
We have a one-eyed cat, he is 12 years old and very sweet and fond of people. He doesn’t like holidays abroad, so if you could look after him, he would be very thankful. But our neighbours can also take care of him if you would like to stay away for a few nights.
The surrounding area is what we call a ‘wierdenlandschap’: a lot of villages here were built on artificial dwelling hills in the landscape, so the inhabitants would keep there feet dry during high tide before the dikes were built. The area has a large network of footpaths, cyclepaths, and sailing/canoeing routes. Of particular interest are the so-called 'maren': narrow waterways twisting and turning their way throughout the countryside. They are particularly suitable for recreational sailing and canoeing. One of these maren runs through our village, and there are nice cyclepaths everywhere. We have four bicycles you can use to discover the area.
Besides well-known attractions such as the seal crèche in Pieterburen (15 minutes by car), the centre for mud flat walking and the Lauwersmeer Area (15 minutes by car), there are also some other attractions. For instance, there is the popular climbing and adventure centre ‘Waddenfun’ (a five-minute walk away), the beautiful 14th-century castle of Verhildersum in Leens (15 minutes by bike), Abraham's Mustard Museum in Eenrum (20 minutes by bike) and many churches, towers, listed heritage farms, terps and protected village settings. There are also famous church organs built by Arp Schnitger, Lohman (family) and Hinsz.
Our village is a famous place of pilgrimage; a lot of people visit The hermitage of Our Lady of the Enclosed Garden, a popular Marian shrine. Processions go from Wehe-den Hoorn to Warfhuizen four or five times a year. It is one of the few hermitages in the Netherlands still inhabited by a hermit, and Warfhuizen is the northernmost Maria sanctuary of continental Europe.
The Lauwersmeer Area (15 minute drive away) is a national park that lies between Groningen and Friesland. It is a paradise for those who love fishing, bird watching, walking, and cycling. It features a few waters ports and is one of the hotspots in the Netherlands for windsurfers. There is a nice beach that is also very suitable for small children, and has a large playground. From Lauwersoog you can also take the boat to Schiermonnikoog, one of the Frisian Islands, where you can bike or walk in the dunes and spend a day at the beach. Another Frisian Island nearby worth visiting is Borkum, which is actually a German island. Very nice too, and completely different from Schiermonnikoog, with a promenade and little terraces on the beach.
At a 25 minute drive is the city Groningen, the biggest city in the north of the Netherlands. There you can find a lot of shops, museums, cafe’s with nice terraces and lots of students . The medieval city is surrounded by canals, a round trip is recommended.
