Nice house near the beach.
Our house in Castricum is well located for a nice holiday. The living room is spacious and has a sliding door to the garden. For Dutch understanding, it is a large garden (140 M2). In the garden are two terraces, one near the house where there is a large table to dine. And one in the back where you can lounge. Also there is a place for a hammock and a trampoline.
On the ground floor of our house is the living room. Living room and kitchen are seperate rooms. There is also a hall. From there you have 4 doors: living room, kitchen, toilet en cellar.
On the first floor there are a large room with a two person-bed, another large room with a one-person bed and one smaller room (now in use as cycling training room, but for the holiday it can be emptied and then there is place for another one-person matras). The bathroom is also on this floor. It has a shower, a bath tub, toilet and a sink.
On the second floor, there is a space where the laundry can be done (hung up, but there is a clothes dryer too). There is also an extra fridge and freezer. And there is one large room under the roof with a dormer. It contains a one-person bed.
Right now we have the following beds: 1 2P, 2 1P and one mattress for on the ground. If it needs to be, we can also arrange for two more mattresses for on the ground, they can be put in the rooms of the 1P beds.
In our house we have a lovely cat who needs some attention and affection. In the evenings he loves to lie on your lap.
About exchanging cars: If our destination is not too far to drive, we prefer to go by our own car and not exchange cars.
We live near the beach (5km), you can use our bikes to go there. You can also go by car, but parking there is expensive. There are two places where you can enter the beach. There is one that can only be reached by bike, we call this the quiet beach. It is not busy here, but there are no services. Often, because of the tide, you can find here a "mini-sea", it is knee deep. Between the mini-sea and de real sea lies a sandbank that causes this mini-sea. The mini-sea is ideal for small children to play in, the water is warmer than the real sea en there are no waves. If you're lucky you can catch excellent shrimps here. Our kids like to take them home and cook them for a lovely shrimp cocktail. A shrimp net is available.
Also, since it is not so crowded on this beach, you have a good overview, so you can closely monitor your children.
The other part of the beach, you can reach by bike and car. On the beach here you can find catering industry and there are toilets. Also some play-houses for the kids and fields for beach volley. There is a surf school for lessons in surfing or golf surfing. We call this the busy beach, since it is more crowded, especially on hot days, when it seems that the whole of Holland wants to go there.
Active sports at sea are golfsurfing (https://www.ozlines.com/) and kitesurfing (https://www.kiteflow.nl/).
Between our town and the beach lie dunes covered with forest and heather. A nice place for walking and cycling.
On the other side of Castricum you can find another typical Dutch environment: polders and lakes. Here you can cycle on many cycling paths. Routes (also through forest and dunes) can be planned by yourself by cycling from number to number (https://www.fietsknoop.nl/planner). You can rent sailing- or motor boats for fine trips on Uitgeester and Alkmaardermeer (lake) (http://www.botenverhuuruitgeest.nl/). Or rent a canoe to paddle through the polders near the lakes. Very beautiful route in water that is only 1 m deep (http://www.kanoverhuurdeaker.nl/).
Around Amsterdam lies the famous "Stelling van Amsterdam", a ring of fortresses to defend the city, built around 1900. You can reach Fort Kijk by bike (https://www.stellingvanamsterdam.nl/nl/startpagina).
The supermarket and other shops are at a distance of 5 minutes walking. And at a distance of 5 minutes cycling, you can also find a small shopping mall.
Castricum has a train station, about ten to fifteen minutes walking from our house, or you can park at the station for free. From there it is 20 minutes by train to Amsterdam Central Station, or you can go to one of the smaller city's in our vicinity, Alkmaar or Haarlem. All three city's are really worth visiting. They have a nice antique look. They have many things to do for grown-ups as well as nice things for children.
About one hour by train, you can go to Rotterdam, a very different city, since it was bombed in de second world war and therefore had to be rebuild. It has become a city of modern architecture. Also Rotterdam "Haven", the port of Rotterdam is worth a visit.
We will provide you with recommended outings suitable for your family if we make an exchange.
The Netherlands have a few good amusement parks. When you have really small children, than "Sprookjeswonderland" is very nice (and cheap). It is situated in Enkhuizen, one hour driving from our place. Enkhuizen itself is a beautiful old fishermen's town and by itself worth a visit. And it harbours also an open air museum, where they show you how the dutch lived in the past.
Then there is the Efteling, our most famous amusement park en absolutely the best of Holland. Though it is about one and half hour driving (very long driving for Dutch understanding...), it is worth it. It has a good ambiance en is suitable for all ages. It has rollercoasters enough for the bigger ones, all with a real ambiance and a good story build around it. And the fairytale forest, dream flight (droomvlucht) and the carnaval are nice for the smaller ones (and all grown ups who still love this).
If you are only interested in rollercoasters en you don't need an ambiance, than Walibi Holland is a good place to go. Higher, longer en faster rollercoasters are not to be found in Holland. This is about one hour and 15 minutes driving from our place.

About Our Family
We are a family of four: Daan (42), Maaike (45), Jip (12) and Geert (10). Daan has an office job: register controller, Maaike is a teacher of 9 - 12 year olds. Jip loves to do active stuff, like golf surfing, abseilen and rafting. Geert loves gaming most, but in the end, when he is outdoors, he also makes fun. Not the daredevil his sister is, but playing with friends (jachtseizoen, hide and seek), jumping on the trampoline and fishing are more his cup of tea.
Untill now we have always spend our holidays on campings. We have walked many trails in France in the past. Daan also loves to go cycling on his racing bike, while Maaike reads and cooks.
Lately we have become less interested in camping, since the campings are no longer what they used to be. And so now we're in for something new: house exchange.
We are already used to people residing in our house. Often during our holidays, friends and family have resided in our house for two weeks. After all, the location so close to the beach is ideal for holidays, also for people from Holland, not living near the beach.
This year we would like to find a family to make an exchange with. Location: preferably somewhere in Europe, accessible by car or train. We'd rather not fly.
We are also open to an exchange for a weekend with people living not too far away. We love the Netherlands, all regions!
We enjoy the life with our kids. They get a lot of our attention, taking and picking them up from their sports and musical lessons. In the weekends we go with them to their matches of athletics and volleyball. Or we go listening to a concert of our youngest, he plays the saxophone. We love ice-skating, cycling and walking. At home we like to play board-games, watch movies or special family programmes, like Holland's got talent or Who is the mole. The kids like to cook together with us, right now we are specializing in homemade hamburgers. We have a big family with lots of cousins whose birthdays we all attend.
Oh, and during the week we also go working...
When Daan and Maaike have got time for themselves they like to read, Daan watches netflix and Maaike likes to knit and hook. In the past years we also have spent a lot of time in improving our house and garden. And still we are not ready, one step at a time.
