A comfortable home in the North West of Ireland minutes from the sea
WHERE WE ARE
Welcome to the beautiful north west of Ireland, to our comfortable 4 bedroomed home on a half acre, just 5 miles from Sligo town in County Sligo. We live in a semi-rural area, with close neighbours who will happily lend a hand should the need arise. We also have family living a few miles away. The nearest village is 1 mile away, (Rathcormack) consists of shop (sells hot food also), post office, pub, church (RC) and primary school.
We are 3 miles from the coastal village of Rosses Point, with it's 18 hole championship golf course, amazing views, and blue flag beach and hotel. Our home has views of Knocknarea(at back) and Benbulben(at front) mountains.
We are situated on the Wild Atlantic Way, in the region known as the surf coast (see www.wildatlanticway.com ) approximately 15 minutes drive from Mullaghmore Head, and only 5 minutes drive to a beautiful view of Sliabh Liag, in the Donegal mountains (approx. 1.5 hours drive to Sliabh Liag, the highest ocean cliffs in Europe)).
Sligo town is a 5 minute drive away, with a population of just under 20,000, it has a cinema, many restaurants, some traditional Irish pubs and lots of independant retailers showcasing the best of Irish craftsmanship. Check out www.sligotourism.ie, www.sligotown.net and www.discoverireland.ie
HOW TO GET HERE
our nearest airport is Ireland West (Knock) http://www.irelandwestairport.com which is a 1 hour drive away. It has frequent connections with the U.K. (and onwards to the USA, Canada etc) and to some European countries. This also makes a break in London an easy journey as there are several flights daily from Knock, costing approx 50 euro return if booked early.......
There are direct international flights into Shannon airport which is a 3 hour drive away, or into Dublin airport which is 3-3.5 hours away.
A car is essential, renting a car in Ireland is easy, with unlimited mileage as standard. However, if you would like to experience Dublin city and don't fancy driving then there are 5 trains a day from Sligo town taking 3 hours, and you could even make it a day trip. www.irishrail.ie/. There are also numerous bus routes, http://www.buseireann.ie including Galway and Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Please ignore dates on photos........wrong camera settings...all photos are current.
Our home was built in 1979, totally remodelled in the last 8 years. From the outside it looks like a bungalow (all on ground floor), however, we do have a teak staircase as we converted our attic several years ago. Upstairs has two large double bedrooms (one with king size bed(5ft wide), the other a double bed(4ft 6inswide)) and a separate bathroom (with walk-in shower). You can catch a glimpse of an inlet of the sea from the upstairs velux windows.
On the ground floor, there is a further 2 bedrooms, including the master bedroom (king size bed, 5ft wide, semitempurapedic mattress, really comfy) which has a small ensuite (with shower), 32inch flat screen HDTV and a view of Knocknarea mountain in the distance. There is also a family bathroom (jacuzzi corner bath with hand held shower over). The second ground floor bedroom has a double bed(4ft 6ins wide), and currently also contains a threadmill and exercise bike, with views of benbulben mountain range and farmland.
The kitchen and dining area has been remodelled too, and contains an elecric double oven, gas hob, dishwasher, microwave, multiple cooking utensils and even a george foreman and a wall mounted small flat screen tv so you can watch your favourite tv programme whilst you cook!!! I love to bake and will make sure there are some tasty homemade Irish goodies in the freezer for your use...there is also a small utility room containing the washine machine and tumble dryer and another kitchen sink. There is direct access onto the large patio area from the dining space and from the back door of the utility room with one step down.
On the patio we have a 3 seater swing, and patio table and chairs, a sun lounger and a gas bbq so that you can relax outside and listen to the birdsong, and depending on the time of year, perhaps the young lambs running in the farmer's field behind our garden.
The living room has a 46 inch HDTV with a blue ray player (multiple videos available), satillite receiver ......There is a surround sound system also. We have just redecorated this room, so have a new suite,(includes 5 recliner seats) curtains etc This room has a very large window, looking out onto fields and mountain (benbulben range) with no houses directly opposite our home. Our road is quiet, and leads to an inlet of the sea, (Drumcliffe estuary) with fabulous views of benbulben mountain.
As there are 2 bedrooms downstairs our home is very suitable for anyone with difficulty climbing stairs. we also have a single bedroom on the ground floor which is currently used as a computer room and stores some of my yarn and books.
The floors throughout the house are real wood, (some pine, some beech,) the only carpet is in the computer room, the bathrooms are tiled.
We have a large garden front and rear, with many shrubs, and lots of free parking around the house. We do not have any pets at present.
Home heating system is oil fired and there is an open fireplace in the living room (in case of cool evenings!!). There is nothing quite like a cup of coffee, (even an Irish coffee), in front of a real fire, we will ensure that there are adequate supplies of turf (peat), coal and timber for your use.
We have wi-fi(recently improved service), satellite tv, landline phone to help keep you connected to the outside world
There are many attractions nearby, we are living in Yeats Country (the poet, check out http://www.yeatssociety.com/ and http://lissadellhouse.com/. W.B.Yeats is buried a few miles away, and many of the places he wrote about are within a 15 minute drive of our home....lough gill, benbulben, glencar waterfall. ...free to visit and enjoy.
We have many beautiful beaches, the nearest blue flag beach is Rosses Point, less than 10 minutes away by car, but there are nearer ones which only the locals know about and we will gladly leave directions for your visit. The" third beach" is so quiet, you will possibly be the only ones there, with a view of seals basking on the sunshine, Lissadell house in the distance and mussels farms ( the area is well known for our local mussels), with only the sound of the birds in the grass and the waves of the sea for company. Look to the right for majestic Benbulben and to the left for Rosses Point golf course with Knocknarea beyond.
If you would like to visit a land of green, participate in horse riding on a beach with the wind in your hair (http://islandviewridingstables.com/), have a beer in the local traditional Irish pub (http://www.hargadons.com/) or eat some of our locally grown lamb, beef or seafood etc at www.langs.ie/ or yeatstavernrestaurant.com) or hear traditional Irish music/dance/theatre then our home is the place to be.........you can do all and more within 10-20 minutes drive. Perhaps you would like to visit the apparition site at Knock Shrine (www.knockshrine.ie/) a place of peace and reconcilitation....only over an hour away.....
If history is your thing you will be spoilt for choice......from the 5000 year old tombs of carrowmore see http://www.heritageireland.ie/en/north-west/carrowmoremegalithiccemetery/ and http://www.carrowkeel.com/sites/carrowmore/carrowmore1a.html
investigate an area older than the pyramids...ceide fields..
the beautiful Donegal is only 40minutes away where you can spend many hours touring among the mountains see http://www.govisitdonegal.com/
place a bet in the local sligo races http://www.countysligoraces.com/ or
a round of golf at the local championship golf course(only 10 minutes away by car) see www.countysligogolfclub.ie/..........and there's more........renowned surfing destination of Strandhill is a 15 minute drive away as is the spectacular Mullaghmore.

About Our Family
we are empty nesters! with 2 grown children. I am retired and my husband is semi-retired so our dates are very flexible. We love to travel, and have done house exchanges years ago and are ready to enjoy it once again now that our children are no longer living at home. We are proud of our home and have made many changes in the 26 years we have lived here and we will treat your home as if it was ours.
we enjoy seeing new locations, and have a quiet lifestyle. We love the outdoors and exploring new places. We are happy in either a city or a rural setting and would hope to combine both in an exchange. We also enjoy watching the birds in our garden who give us hours of fun as we observe their behaviour.
I am very interested in crafts, whilst my husband enjoys car rallying (as a spectator), soccer, walking and music. We would love to visit festivals showcasing local crafts, food and music.
Due to some minor mobility issues a downstairs bedroom and bathroom would be ideal, and a walk-in shower/wet room is preferable.
