House near beach in small fishing town in Cornwall, South West England
4 bed house (2 doubles, one single and one room with sofa bed) with great views over the estuary in the small fishing port of Looe in Cornwall. Just minutes from the centre of town, Looe beach and the Cornish coastal path there is lots on offer within walking distance. Or use the house as a base for exploring Cornwall.
From the the house you look down to the river and the boats on their moorings, the houses along the opposite quay and behind them the steep valleys which are a hallmark of South East Cornwall. Within 5 or 10 minutes you can be walking along the woods and higher reaches of the estuary with its birdlife, or joining the coastal path and heading for the nearby fishing village of Polperro. Or relax and enjoy our terraced garden with great views at the top and a barbecue area.
We love where we live, and can recommend it for its safe sandy beach, great for families in the summer, or for walking and local atmosphere at any time of year. As well as the attraction of the immediate environs of Looe (including river trips and fishing trips in season, competitively priced) you have Bodmin Moor about 12 miles away, with moorland walking, village pubs and a fascinating industrial heritage of granite, copper and tin. It’s part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site and the disused engine houses on the moor are photogenic.
Living on a steep narrow hill has its challenges. There are 15 steps up to the front door, and more up to the garden. The parking space is big enough for one car but the smaller your car the easier you will find it to park. Barbican Hill is particularly narrow at the lower section where we live and if you are not happy driving it you can find roadside parking 5 – 10 minutes walk up the hill or use a Car Park in the main town below us. We are accessible by train on the branch line from Liskeard to Looe for those who don’t want to drive. Another option is to take a coach to Plymouth or Liskeard and a local bus to Looe.
There are a number of pubs and restaurants in town offering eating out experiences to suit all budgets and styles, as well as small local supermarkets and fish straight from the sea for those wishing to cook.
