An Enchanting Cottage Overlooking the Atlantic near Doolin and Lisdoonvarna, West of Ireland

We are always interested in hearing from Intervac friends who would like to exchange, as we have a relatively flexible schedule. Why not get in touch?

We are a couple in our 30s who have a baby girl. We live in a cottage on the west coast of Ireland. Our home has a view of the Atlantic ocean on one side and is cushioned by the hills of Slieve Elva on the other. At night, you can enjoy an interrupted view of the star-filled night sky. This beautiful, wild area is within the incomparable Burren National Park which has been described as a 'lunar landscape'. 'The Burren Way' walking trail passes right by our door.

The Burren region is internationally famous for its landscape and flora. Botanically, the Burren is one of the most fascinating regions in Western Europe with plants normally found in widely separate parts of the continent growing alongside each other, including many rare orchids. This unusual flora supports an equally diverse fauna - from feral goats to pine martens; extraordinary butterflies to snake-like slow worms. As regards archaeology, there is a huge amount to see including over 500 ring-forts and many neolithic tombs as well as castles, ruins and other remains. You can read more about the area here: http://www.burrennationalpark.ie/

In contrast to the rural setting of the cottage, the bustling towns of Doolin (5km) and Lisdoonvarna (4km) are conveniently situated a short distance away. Both of these towns are renowned for traditional Irish music, dancing and night-life as well as having great pubs and restaurants. Taxis are freely available to and from these towns if you would like to try some of our local craft beers (we especially recommend Burren Gold (blonde beer), Red (ale) and Black (stout)), it's also an easy walk to either town. The area is also known for its locally produced food which includes organic smoked salmon, organic lamb and pork, goats cheese, gouda-style cheese and ice-cream. One of our nearest restaurants, 'The Wild Honey Inn' (3.5km), is the first gastropub in Ireland to have been awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand. http://www.wildhoneyinn.com/

The cottage is surrounded by amazing opportunities for adventuring on foot, on horse-back, by bicycle, in the sea (surfing, swimming, cruises) or even underground in the caves of the Burren (http://www.burrencaving.com/#!caving/cq4e). You can choose whether to explore the area on your own (we will supply maps with walking routes) or with a guide. There are world-class golf courses along the coast, most notably in Lahinch (18km) and Doonbeg (45km).

We have a large, traditional stone fire-place with a cast-iron stove in the living room - the perfect place to relax in front of a fire with a glass of wine or a cup of tea and a good book! The house is filled with books and we have a television/DVD player. We have wi-fi available to use in all rooms. Our kitchen has all modern conveniences including dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, freezer. Two of the bedrooms have double beds and the master bedroom has a king-size bed as well as an en-suite shower room. One other (single) bedroom is currently being used as an office, and so we usually seal it during an exchange - but if it's needed as a bedroom, that is possible on request.

There is a view of the Aran Islands from our cottage, the islands are only a 20 minute ferry journey from Doolin.
The cultural city of Galway is 65km away, and the perfect place to travel on a day-trip. Ennis is a vibrant town just 40km away, its medieval streets are filled with interesting shops.
Regardless of your interests, you will find adventure, history, beauty and fun in abundance here.

Getting here is easy! Shannon International airport is only one hour away by car. If it's more convenient to arrive in Dublin, it is a 3 hour drive to the house - from Cork airport it is a 2 and a half hour journey. Rental cars are available at the airports. It's also possible to travel to Ireland by ferry - there are ports in Rosslare, Larne, Dublin, Ringaskiddy etc.
We usually travel with friends (a couple or one friend). We will treat your home as though it is our own.
