Relax with a view of the Aegean. 5 Minute walk to lovely beach.
Syros island is in the middle of the Cyclades group of islands in the Southern Aegean. It is easily accessible by ferry (2.5 - 4 hours from Pireas) or plane (25 minutes from Athens). Easyjet have direct flights from Gatwick to Mykonos. From there you can get the ferry to Syros which takes about one hour. The connection is good and there is no need for an overnight stay on Mykonos unless one wants to explore this island also.
Syros is in an ideal position for island hopping. Mykonos is less than an hour away. Naxos, Delos, Paros, Tinos are also very close. There are ferry connections to Rhodes,Crete and Turkey via Samos and Kos.
Its coastline is abundant with beautiful beaches, cafes, tavernas and scenic walks. There is no mass tourism, and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. Ermoupolis, the main city and port, is full of nineteenth century neoclassical buildings, quaint marble paved narrow streets and lots of interesting little shops. It is a world heritage site.
Our holiday home overlooks the little bay of Ahlathi which is close to the township of Vari, between Azolimnos and Megas Gialos. Ahlathi beach which we love is only 3-4 minutes on foot from the house. There is a lovely restaurant right by the water which is open in the summer months. Vari Beach which is 10-15 minutes away on foot, has more cafes, restaurants and a grocery store. Ermoupolis is 15-20 minutes away by bus. The bus stop is at the bottom of our driveway. The bus also takes you around all the best beaches which are situated in the southern part of the island.
The home is built in the traditional blue and white colours. It is part of a "village" complex consisting of 12 units. The majority of the units are owned by Athenians who are mostly there in August.
It has two bedrooms and a spacious open plan sitting/dining room. The master bedroom has a double bed and the other bedroom has four very comfortable bunk beds. There is one full bathroom and another toilet with basin. The kitchen is fully equipped. Many gourmet meals have been prepared in the kitchen! There is also a 40 square metre terrace overlooking the bay and the open Aegean Sea beyond the low hills. Imagine yourself sitting on the terrace drinking wine, accompanied by authentic Greek nibbles and watching the ferries sail by...
We are certain that you will get to love this little relatively unknown island, the "Duchess of the Aegean" as the Greeks call it.

About Our Family
David and I are a couple in our mid sixties who love travelling and home exchanging. We have been exchanging and hosting since the year 2000. We have been living in Melbourne for 9 years to date, coming from Wellington, NZ where we also spend lots of time. I retired 2 years ago, my last job being an Economics Lecturer at Trinity College, the University of Melbourne. David is one of the executive directors at the Victoria State Department of Education. We have one daughter (29) who is currently teaching English in Japan. Most of the time it is only the two of us travelling but every now and then we are joined by our daughter or close friends and family.
During our time of home exchanging we have formed lasting friendships with many of our exchangers and still keep in touch.
We love going out with friends, movies, restaurants, cafes, shows and of course making travel plans. Home exchanging has opened up a new world for us! We love it!!
