House in Hoboken, USA

We live in an amazing row house built in the late 1800s on a lovely residential block. It's painted brownstone Victorian exterior belies it's renovated, contemporary interior. A mix of mid-century modern and traditional, our urban home truly represents a marriage of styles. After climbing a classic NY metropolitan stoop, you enter into a small foyer and hallway. A parlor awaits you, eclectically decorated with a Genoa crystal chandelier, Herman Miller chairs, velour sofa, Victorian club chairs, and Art Deco quarter-sawn mantle. A painting by our friend and celebrated artist Katherine Parker, whose work was recently featured at the Spanierman Modern in Manhattan, graces one wall. The parlor is a wonderful place to relax with family and friends, read, listen to music, or nap.

Just beyond the parlor is the heart of our home -- our newly renovated kitchen, featuring a Leibher refrigerator, DCS 5-burner range, and Fisher & Pakel 2-drawer dishwasher. With exposed brick, reverse print botanical pineapple wallpaper (always a conversation piece), limestone tile, Poggenpohl and IKEA cabinets, and a Ralph Lauren sofa, the hearth of our home is both stylish and  comfortable. Light streams into the kitchen through windows, doors, and a transom facing a small deck and yard. The deck holds a gas grill, cafe table with four chairs, and herbs. A mature flowering cherry tree shades a large sofa, three lounge chairs, and table with six chairs.

The garden level of our home boasts a open plan family room with a kitchenette/bar and full bathroom. A Design Within Reach day bed expands to a king-size bed. A flatscreen television with DVD, Wii game system (yes, we have Guitar Hero) and a closet full of board games provide ample entertainment for children and adults alike.

Two bedrooms on the third floor feature one twin and two twin beds, respectively. These bedrooms are occupied by our three teenagers, reflecting their personalities. The girls' room is a riot of color and collectibles; while their brother's room is more staid and serene. The bedrooms share a full bathroom with a double sink.

Featuring original plaster detail and a marble mantle, the master bedroom, on the top floor, has a king-size bed with exquisite linens. It's west-facing exposure keeps this room warm and sunny all day. Two offices, laundry, and a full bath are also on this level of our four-story home.

Having lived here for nearly 20 years, we have lovingly renovated our home and raised our three children here. We are certain that you, too, will enjoy our home as much as we do.

Hoboken is referred to as the 6th borough of NYC because of its close proximity to Manhattan and similarity to Brooklyn. With over 40,000 residents in a mile square, Hoboken is certainly a city. Life here, however, can be more town-like. Most blocks are tree-lined and feature row houses built in the late 1800s constructed of brownstone or brick. Once home to dozens of shipyards and the location of the Marlon Brando film "On the Waterfront," Hoboken lies on the Hudson River directly across from Manhattan. Proximity to Greenwich Village, Tribeca, Chelsea, and mid-town is more ideal than many neighborhoods actually in Manhattan.   Public transportation choices are several -- 10 minute ferry to either World Trade Center or 38th Street dock, 10-minute underground from Christopher to 34th Streets (across from Macy's Herald Square), or 10-miunte bus ride (with no traffic!) to Times Square. And, you can drive to NY through either the Holland Tunnel, which takes you downtown, or the Lincoln Tunnel, which leaves you in mid-town.

Ellis Island, Liberty State Park, Liberty Science Center, Newark Airport, the outlet stores of Secaucus, and, of course, Manhattan are within a 20-minute driving radius of our home.

Best known as the birthplace of Frank Sinatra, baseball, and now the reality show "Cake Boss," Hoboken is the prefect place to vacation with your family while visiting Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Jersey Shore.

Laura is a certified nutritionist/registered dietitian with a holistic private practice who likes to eat. A victim of downsizing, Stephen is enjoying his new career as a consultant. Together, we are raising our three teenagers (yes, we're living the dream!). Victoria travels to school in Brooklyn -- a testament to our proximity to NYC, where she is the star of every high school musical. Twins Isabella and Zachary attend school in NJ -- both enjoy swimming, soccer, playing the Wii, and torturing their older sister. Though we don't have any pets, we are often visited by our pet "cousins" -- a boxer named Bruiser and a mutt named Snuggles/Pretzel. The dogs are owned by Laura's brother and sister, respectively, who moved to Hoboken after Laura settled here.
