Old house in Bangor, Snowdonia, North Wales, Great Britain

Our house is situated between the mountains of Snowdonia and the Island of Anglesey, so there are lots of outdoor activities easily available. Bangor is a small University town of about 15,000 inhabitants and 8,000 students (who are away on holiday from June to September). We live in Upper Bangor close to the University. It is a spacious house built in 1838 and most of our friends like it. There are four large double bedrooms, one of them also has two bunk beds, and three reception rooms downstairs.

We are a relaxed and informal family. That is shorthand for: the house is not always clean and tidy - but it will certainly be cleaned for the arrival of any guests. Some parts (quite a few actually) could do with some repainting but we can never find the right colour and don't want to cover up the patina of age.

The garden takes up quite a bit of Ian's time but continues to be fairly wild despite that. The house, annex and garden together occupy more than one acre - 0.4 hectares. We currently have three beehives in the garden (Gill's hobby) and we used to keep hens.

There have been lots of visitors over the years and all are welcome. As a result it is quite well-worn and 'lived-in' here.
Not recommended for those with high standards when it comes to decorations and furnishings.

Adjacent to the house is a self-contained modern annex or granny flat, which is currently lived in by one of our sons and is sometimes rented out or might be available as part of the exchanges. It has a largely separate garden and a separate entrance,

We also have a small flat in central London located between London Bridge and Elephant & Castle (postcode SE1 1PE) which could form part of a holiday. It has one very small double bedroom and a sofa bed in the living room/kitchen. It is within walking distance of most to the central London attractions and a 4 hour train trip from Bangor.

We made our first Intervac exchange, to Zell in Germany, in 1990.

Our Neighbourhood

Nearest Airport: Liverpool or Manchester - 80/100 miles

  • shopping Morrisons Supermarket (0.2 km)
  • boating This is where our house is!! (0.3 km)

We're in a pleasant residential neighbourhood in Upper Bangor above most of the city. There are university buildings all around and its busy in term time and quiet in the university holidays - June to September plus Easter and Christmas.
The house is 7 minutes walk from the mainline station with frequent trains to London (takes about 3.5 hours) and Holyhead (35 minutes) where there are boats to Dublin in Ireland. It is on a major bus route and 12 minutes walk from the Bangor bus station.

Liverpool (1.5 hours by road) and Manchester (about the same or 2.5 hours by train) are the nearest international airports. Because of the railway any of the London airports are also quite practical.
